FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is semi-permanent makeup?

Semi-permanent makeup (SPMU) is a form of cosmetic tattooing that implants pigment into the upper layers of the skin to create the appearance of makeup. Unlike traditional tattoos, SPMU is designed to fade naturally over time, typically lasting 1–3 years depending on skin type, lifestyle and the treatment area.

Does SPMU hurt?

Comfort levels vary from person to person, but most clients describe the sensation as mild and very tolerable. Alexandra applies a professional topical numbing cream before every SPMU treatment to minimise discomfort, ensuring your experience is as comfortable as possible throughout.

How long does semi-permanent makeup last?

Most SPMU treatments last between 12 months and 3 years, depending on factors such as skin type, sun exposure, skincare routines and metabolism. Oilier skin types may find results fade more quickly. Annual colour boost appointments are recommended to keep your results looking their best.

What should I expect during the healing process?

In the days immediately following your SPMU treatment, the colour will appear darker and more intense than the final result. This is completely normal. The skin will gently flake and the pigment will soften and settle over 4–6 weeks. A follow-up appointment is included to perfect your results once fully healed.

Who is not suitable for SPMU?

SPMU may not be suitable for clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, undergoing chemotherapy, have certain skin conditions on or near the treatment area, or are taking blood-thinning medication. Alexandra conducts a thorough consultation and medical health screen before every treatment to ensure your safety and suitability.

Do I need a patch test before my SPMU treatment?

Yes. Alexandra requires all new clients to undergo a patch test at least 48 hours before their first SPMU appointment. This is a vital safety measure to rule out any potential allergic reactions to the pigments used. Patch tests are carried out at a short consultation appointment prior to your treatment date.

How many sessions will I need?

Most SPMU treatments consist of an initial appointment followed by a perfecting top-up session 6–8 weeks later, once the skin has fully healed. This two-stage process ensures the most natural, refined and long-lasting result possible. Subsequent maintenance appointments are typically needed every 12–18 months.

Can SPMU be removed if I change my mind?

Yes. Alexandra offers professional laser tattoo and SPMU removal at her Wirral studio. Laser removal is the safest and most effective method for removing or lightening semi-permanent makeup, and is also offered as a preparatory step before corrective work. A consultation is required to assess suitability and create a tailored removal plan.
